You have seen it after a rainstorm. The patio you walk past every day suddenly looks twice as good — the greys go charcoal, the tans go caramel, and every bit of colour in the stone wakes up. Then the water dries and it all goes flat again.
A wet look paver sealer is how you keep that. It is the most popular finish McKinnon sells for pavers, and it is also the one people ask the most questions about: how shiny is it really, why did one patch come out darker than another, and how do you get it even across a whole driveway?

Bare pavers are porous and slightly rough at the surface. Light hitting that surface scatters in every direction, and scattered light reads to your eye as pale, dusty and washed out.
Water temporarily fixes that. It fills the surface pores and creates a smooth, even film, so light reflects instead of scattering — and the colour that was always in the stone finally shows.
A wet look sealer does the same thing permanently. A penetrating sealer such as McKinnon Crystal Coat soaks into the paver and leaves a clear resin film at and just below the surface. That film smooths out the microscopic roughness, deepens the colour, and adds a soft sheen — the same optical effect as rain, without the rain.
That is worth understanding, because it tells you something useful: the wet look is a lighting effect, not a paint. The sealer is not adding colour. It is revealing the colour that is already in your pavers. Which is exactly why the same product looks dramatic on one patio and subtle on another.
This is where expectations go wrong most often. People hear "wet look" and picture a mirror.

If you were hoping for a high-gloss, poured-on shine, a semi-gloss wet look will read as more restrained than that — and for most homes, that is the point. A softer sheen looks like good stone. A heavy glassy coat tends to look like a coating sitting on top of stone, and it shows every scuff.
Two neighbours can use the same sealer and get noticeably different results. Four things drive that.
Porosity is the single biggest factor. A thirsty, older, weathered paver drinks in more sealer and darkens more dramatically. A dense, newer, tightly finished paver takes less and changes less.
Tumbled and textured pavers usually show the strongest transformation, because they have the most surface texture to smooth out. Smooth, dense, large-format pavers often show the subtlest change.
More coats build more sheen — up to a point. The first coat does most of the colour deepening. A second coat mainly adds gloss and evens out the finish on porous surfaces.

Spread the same gallon over 120 square feet and you get a heavier, glossier film. Spread it over 220 and you get a lighter, more natural one. This is why coverage rate matters as much as coat count — and why an inconsistent spread rate is the number one cause of a blotchy finish.
Sealer cannot penetrate through dirt, efflorescence, or old failing coatings, and it cannot properly cure into a damp paver. Prep and dryness do not just affect durability — they directly change how the finish looks.

A good wet-look result is consistent from paver to paver: every unit carries a similar depth of colour and a similar soft sheen, with no dull patches and no glossy hot spots.
Slight variation between individual pavers is normal and expected — they are manufactured units with natural variation, and some will always be a little more absorbent than their neighbours. What you do not want is variation in bands, streaks or blotches, because that is an application pattern, not the pavers.

Nearly every wet-look complaint traces back to one of these four.
Usually an uneven spread rate, or sealing over an area that was not uniformly clean. Prevention: consistent application rate, thorough prep, and keeping a wet edge. Porous spots that soaked up more sealer than their neighbours can often be evened out with a light additional coat over the whole area — not just the dull patches.
Haze is almost always trapped moisture. It happens when pavers were still damp underneath, when it rained too soon after sealing, or when sealer was applied so heavily that the surface skinned over before what was underneath could release. Prevention: make sure the surface is genuinely dry, check the forecast, and do not over-apply.
Any sealed surface can be slicker than an unsealed one when it is wet, and a glossier finish more so. It matters most around pool decks, steps and shaded walkways that stay damp. This is the over-application failure. Piling on coats to chase more gloss leaves excess sealer sitting on the surface instead of penetrating into it, and surface build-up is what eventually flakes. More product does not mean more wet look; past a certain point it means a worse finish and more maintenance.
Sealer wears from the top down, and the sheen fades before the protection does. You will usually notice the wet look softening gradually rather than failing suddenly — colour that looks a little flatter, a surface that no longer glows in low sun.
How fast that happens depends on your conditions, not on a number we can promise: direct sun, freeze-thaw cycles, and traffic all shorten it. A shaded, lightly used patio holds its finish far longer than a south-facing driveway.
The good news is that refreshing is straightforward. Because a penetrating sealer wears rather than peeling off in sheets, a maintenance coat over a clean, dry surface generally brings the wet look right back — no stripping required, provided the existing sealer is still sound and was not over-applied to begin with. Treat that as a starting point rather than a guarantee — porous, tumbled and weathered pavers will use more, and dense pavers less. Run a test patch and measure what your own surface actually takes before buying for a large job.
One important note: Crystal Coat is for pavers and concrete. It is not the product for resealing a McKinnon Stone Bond resin-bound stone surface — that is refreshed with fresh Stone Bond resin instead.
